Endodontists are dental specialists that focus on the tooth pulp and the tissues involving the root structure. The pulp contains many of the nerves and blood vessels of the tooth. These tissues can become diseased or injured and once this occurs, the pulp is unable to repair itself. The damaged pulp will eventually die and can cause immense pain that will require a root canal to be treated. Endodontics saves the tooth, helping to avoid the most common alternative to root canal treatment-an extraction.
Endodontists are dentists who have become specialists in pulp therapy. They have completed an additional 2-3 years of training after completing dental school. Endodontists specialize in root canal treatments, pulp therapy and root canal surgery.
